My art celebrates a sense of time, space and place that I find unique to the temporal nature of the stage. As a theatre scenic designer and mixed media artist, I paint to evoke a setting that welcomes you, the viewer, to become the playwright and to enter with your imagination into a world of your own devising. In my art, I’m interested in creating that same aura of expectancy the audience experiences as the curtain opens. I often create for a square window around which I place a border, reminiscent of how the proscenium frames the stage.
Like a scenic designer I produce art in a variety of styles using numerous materials. Sometimes I work in oil and encaustic wax. I create collages and bas-relief pieces that are evocative of theatre macquettes. Primarily, however, I paint with acrylics on textured gessoed paper. I like both bold lush color and monochromatic palettes.
I create my artwork primarily in series: Each episode or vignette explores another theme in a string of scenes or adds another tale to the narrative.
